Which city or regionof China is best for language study?

Each person should research the climate of the various geographical regions of China. (See the map of China here.) For tourism, many are attracted to the lush southern regions of China or the majestic mountains and plateau area inland. For business and shopping, many favor the long-standing commercial hot spots such as Shanghai and Hong Kong. As Beijing enters the arena of world-class cities, it must be noted that ¡°Chinese¡± is spoken in many vastly different ways, and ¡°Standard Mandarin¡± (putonghua) is considered throughout the nation to be the ideal form. Each major city and region has its own dialect, with many sub dialects. In Beijing, visitors are surrounded by people who speak the standard Mandarin. These surroundings offer visitors the chance to practice their newfound language throughout the day, anywhere in the city and outlying areas. |
